The Mind of Murphy

Do you own a dog?  If you do let me ask you this.  Do you ever feel like the thing is making fun of you, mocking you.  I love my 2 Dumb Friends League beasts, Dublin and Bailey.  You’ve heard me talk about them before on the air.  Dublin is the alpha female, Bailey is just a big good ole boy.  We’ve had these 2 for a couple of years now and I love them dearly, they are my friends.  Well, the last couple of weeks a few things have happened with them and I’m convinced they are making fun of me.  I got up from my precious nap they other day and here is Dublin actually chewing on my shoe!  She has never done that before.  When I began to lecture her I swear she made a noise that sounded like a laugh!  I couldn’t believe it, could she have just laughed at me?  I just walked away in disbelief.  Then on Monday I was doing the back yard cleaning thing, I always get that job.  I’m about half way done when I glance back to where I had already cleaned and here is Bailey doing his deed again!  I start to walk at him, a little steamed when I swear he stuck his tongue at me, I couldn’t believe it!  He finished and just walked away.  Now either I need a week at the Aurora home for the strange or my friends are picking on me.  I think I’ll just lay low for awhile

There is a lot of excitement in town this week with the DNC going on.  I hope you treat this an historical experience and not as a bother to your life.  I know you can’t experience all that is going on first hand but I can tell you is is interesting.  Denice and I have been trying to get around as much as possible biu the security is unreal.  One thing you can do as a family and I reccomend is “The Presidential Experience” set up in the parking lot of Mile High stadium.  It is all about the highest office in the land, lots of interesting history here for the whole family.  I especially enjoyed the life size set-up of the oval office and the section of Air Force One that was used by many presidents.  As you can see by the picture of me and Denise in the plane I am the president and she is the first lady.  Of course you probably think it is the other way around, she is the president .  What would that make me, the first Man?  Her personal assistant, of I know, something of a court jester if there was such a thing..I’ll say no more.  Check this event out it is worth the few bucks it costs..

what is it about the olympics that gets you so involved, I mean you watch for hours, stay up way later than you normally would. Heres what amazes me about the whole thing, if you are like me you end up watching and cheering for sports you would never watch. Whens the last time your cheered for diving, badmitton, beach volleyball, shooting, rowing, horse jumping, water polo and more. You would never watch those things outside of the olympics, but here you are cheering away and half the time the USA isn’t even playing! Maybe that is why it is such a world thing, we all come together to cheer for each other even if your hometown favorite is not playing. It’s a good feeling, why can’t have that feeling all the time. Am I wrong but wouldn’t that make the world a better place? I don’t know, but I do know I love the stories that come from the olympics, some are warm and fuzzy while others are sad. It’s good for the kids to watch, I’ve always said to my kids that sports is life, you learn how to handle failure and success. How to work with others, how to take direction, how to handle change and lots more. I’m sad to see it end but before you know it another 4 years will pass and we can all stay up way to late and cheer for sports we don’t even know again.

We had a chance to give back to the community this week, we being my fellow employees here at Entercom communications.  We call it “Make a Difference Day” and it is done company wide across America.  We do this every year and when it comes up your first reaction is …I don’t have enough time for this, but then you feel quilty because we all talk about giving back and paying it forward.  So we all headed down to the VOA mission on Lawerence st.  Our job was do combine all the school supplies from “Stuff for Students” that we did last week with 9 News.  BY the way thanks for your support with that project it went very well, so much so we had to organize about 200,000  school supplies!  I’m so glad we did this, not only was it a great feeling to helping so many children get these supplies but it was a blast to get to know my fellow employees away from work.   You know how that is, you work with people all day but do you really know them.  When you do a worth-while project like this you see another side of people, a warm side we all have but maybe don’t have the opportunity to bring out. Maybe you should try a “Make A Difference Day” where you work, it might completely change how you think of certain people you work with.  Besides you will feel great helping other people…take a look at these pictures…

I know most of you are totally into the olympics as I am.  But I had to brag on myself a bit, I mean I play alot of golf and never win anything.  So when I won the media cup last month from the Children’s Classic at Perry Park I had to show you.  Ok there were only 4 media types playing and two were women, but after factoring in their handicaps I still won by two strokes..it was a miracle.  After I was told I won I could hear the olympic theme playing, the crowd was shouting, no not USA but MURPHY…MURPHY..I loved it.  Well that didn’t really happen but a guy can dream can’t he?  Please share the glory with me, besides I have to defend my title next year and will probably get killed…unless I fill the score out ahead of time!!!…just kidding

Are you getting nervous about the DNC coming to town?  If you keep up with the news it sounds overwhelming all that is planned, all the security.  If you are like many you will be leaving town, not me I can’t wait to see the whole circus.  Not so much the political part of  the week, just all the wacko’s who will be coming to town.  You know down town will be loaded with strange folks all with some sort of agenda they want to get across.  It will be better than any TV you could watch.  I will be sharing all that I see for those that leave town, starting with the fact that Oprah has rented a house in Cherry Creek for $50.000 for the week…how crazy is that.

Ok I admit I tried to talk Carol into trying to rent our house for the week and goin to the mountains, she would have nothing to do with that.  I told my neighbors my idea, they looked at me like I had consumed to much liquid made from the Blue Agave plant if you know what I mean.  Carol told to buy a tent and head to city park if I want to get close to the action.  So if you are passing the park sometime during the big event and you see a tent with KOSI on it..you know who.  If only I could come up with a way to make money off this deal…maybe I could sell something I would like to give to all politcians.. truth serum.

Isn’t vacation the best? I know it never seems to last very long but it is still good.  Last week my ederly parents put their nerves aside and flew out to see the family, it was great.  It’s hard to see your parents grow old, mine are in their 80’s, but  the spirit is still there.  You might wonder where I get my silliness, well look no further then my dad.  I took him to Bronco training camp on Tuesday, if you have ever been to Dove Valley you know th spectaors sit on a small hillside very close to the action.  As I was helping my dad down the field to sit down and take in the action, he stops and announces on the top of his lungs that he is the only Chicago Bears fan here.  Everybody got a big chuckle and decided to humor an old man.

However as my dad shouts this out ,of course I kind of duck my head and turn only to look up and see none other than Bronco great Champ Bailey standing about 15 feet away with a big smile on his face.  He had obviously heard my dad make his loyality statement to the Bears and he stood there with a big grin on his face, I made my dad turn to look and Champ gave him a big tumbs-up, it was a special moment.  However my dad says to me who was that, I told him the great Champ Bailey… long pause..he says WHO?  Oh well he is a Bears fan and he is 86, but I love him… we had a blast.

How are you enjoying the heat? How many times over the past few days have you been asked that question.  How do you respond?  There are many ways I guess.  My favorite was the guy I heard at the grocery store when he said, “Well, at least I don’t have to shovel it”. They both had a good laugh over that one.  I always get a kick out of the people who say during a hot spell “at least it’s a dry heat”.  Isn’t 100 degrees a 100 degress no matter where you live? I think I’m going to start some new responses, like: it’s as hot as a microwave oven on at full blast.  How about: it’s as hot as a dad can get when his dughters date pulls up in a van …I’ve felt that heat before.  This might be a stretch: It’s as hot as I’m going to get with all the road closures during the DNC… that might start a car fire.  Well stay cool, enjoy whats left of the summer because you know before to long, you will have to shovel it.

This is just a quick update for all of you about my daughter, Lizz, and her husband.  I mentioned last time they were in Italy, well here is a picture of loving couple.  WOW, that looks like a great place.  Should I be jealous they got there before me and Carol… oh well.  Lizz said they have sent two cases of wine to our house because they know we don’t drink wine and to hide it from her sisters so it will be safe.  Yea…good luck with that, I’ve got one word for her… EBAY.

I’m starting this new section of the Murphy and Denise page called the “Mind of Murphy”.  The idea is just some of my musings about life and maybe the occasional picture from my cell phone, oh! won’t those be special.  I hope you enjoy some of the stuff and don’t be afraid to email me back with comments.  I was talking to Denise the other day about one of the hardest things with having grown children, It really isn’t hard just a bit bizarre. It is the fact that when we go out  to eat or attend a movie or something involving the spending of money, as a dad, I’m in such a habit of just paying as I have for so many years it is just hard for me to get used to the fact my children now offer to and do most of the time.  It is a great thing don’t get wrong but somehow I think it is a trick and I’m going to get a bill later or something.  I guess as they grow and take on that responsibility I just need to do the same thing. I’m blessed that all 4 of children have jobs and can pay, I guess I’ll just focus on the grandchildren they’ll take my money.  Talk to you soon
